Problems

Legacy Systems Lack Remote Visiblity

Installed control systems often lack remote monitoring or control features. Replacing the system with remote enabled control and sufficient logic is cost-prohibitive.

problem checkmark

Equipment Failure Jeopardizes Inventory

Temperature controlled environments must stay operational to ensure a high quality, safe product. If temperatures fall out of spec, valuable inventory is often lost.

Flexible Systems

Pre-packaged "solutions" come with rigid installation requirements, communication protocols and sensor types, leaving control engineers and integrators boxed-in.

Case Study: Eagle Eye Technologies LLC

Eagle Eye Technologies LLC is a systems integrator providing automation and controls to clients in industries such as Agriculture, Food & Beverage, Water & Wastewater, and more. They prefer our programmable I/O controllers for temperature monitoring in a variety of environments, such as food manufacturing plants, cold storage warehouses, and even animal enclosures at the zoo.

One example of warehouse temperature monitoring an control is avocado ripening rooms. Avocados are picked before fully ripe to enable shipping to hungry customers throughout the world. Once picked, they're shipped and stored in temperature controlled environments to delay ripening and ensure freshness. The end customers, however, want ripe fruit. To satisfy both demands, avocado distributors use ripening rooms to prepare the fruit for the final trip to grocery store shelves.

A ripening room warms the avocados temporarily to stimulate ripening and then cools the fruit again to maintain a ripe state. This process takes about 24 hours and relies on fine-tuned temperature control. Each room can fit about $100,000 worth of avocados, so mistakes can be costly. Distributors require not only advanced controls to run their ripening process, but redundant monitoring and alarms to ensure success.

Eagle Eye Technologies chose ControlByWeb to provide redundant monitoring, remote alarms, and mobile phone access to current temperatures.

Our X-405 and X-406 modules are ideal for monitoring temperature and humidity in warehouses, walk-in freezers and coolers, ripening rooms, chill boxes, and more. These work perfectly for redundant temperature monitoring, alarms, and remote visibility. Our X-410 is ideal for moving from passive monitoring to active control. We're an ideal fit for any application where monitoring temperature and/or humidity is critical.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answer

The short answer is it depends. Each warehouse is unique. Refrigerant systems differ. HVAC systems are custom built for each building based on the needs and budget at the time of installation. Ultimately, our role is to provide reliable monitoring and control hardware. To better answer how many sensors you need, it would be best to hire a consultant or engineering firm that can do a study.

Alternatively, since we provide such and affordable system, you can do your own study by installing sensors throughout to look for problem areas, temperature gradients, etc.

Answer

Our sensors are digital temp sensors and come with a factory calibration that is designed to last for life. You may calibrate them on a regular basis if you choose, but they don't require calibration for most applications.

Answer

The temperature range on most our temperature sensors is -67°F to 257°F (-55°C to 125°C). This is suitable for most temperature monitoring applications, includeing freezer and refrigerator applications.

Answer

Most ControlByWeb modules have an alarm delay function, which will send a temperature alarm if the value is above or below a specified value for a specific amount of time. A second method common in pharmaceutical and other applications would involve adding thermal mass to the temperature sensor, such as putting the sensor in a vial with non-toxic antifreeze.

Answer

Unlike other refrigerator or freezer monitoring systems, ControlByWeb modules use standard networking equipment and do not require an additional gateway device. A full kit will include the monitoring/control module, the sensor(s), the power supply, and relevant mounting accessories.

Answer

You do not need a cloud subscription, but you can certainly add our cloud to make monitoring easier. Our modules are built to be stand-alone devices with on-board logic. To enable remote access, you have two options: use port forwarding or purchase a cloud subscription. The ControlByWeb cloud is an optional add-on to make access easier, but you can still monitor your warehouse temperature remotely without it.

Answer

Multiple temperature and/or humidity sensors can be connected to most ControlByWeb devices that have a 1-Wire bus for temperature/humidity monitoring.

If you have a scenario where you need to extend a sensor's cable length, you can extend it using Cat5 cable. See our FAQ for more information.

Answer

Any 400-Series controller can act as a central device that can pull sensor data for other ControlByWeb devices on the network, or on other remote networks using a standard networking practice known as port forwarding. This means you can have many locations and consolidate your data into one or a few central devices for easier monitoring. This is ideal for C-stores, school districts, restaurant chains, and more.
